Since graduating from university, my journey has led me to relocate many times for positions in international clinics. Along the way, I’ve gained firsthand experience with the lengthy and sometimes complex process of relocating animals. As well as having supported countless ex-pats in the relocation process globally, from necessary vaccinations to completing documentation. Moving with your pets requires preparation, patience, and a touch of creativity to ensure their comfort and safety. Here are my top tips for a smooth transition when relocating with your furry companions.

1. Prepare in Advance

Relocation with pets is not something you can leave to the last minute. It’s crucial to research the specific requirements of your destination country far in advance. Some countries have strict import regulations, including quarantine periods, specific vaccinations, and health certificates. Ensure you:

  • Contact the embassy or consulate of your destination country for up-to-date information.

  • Arrange necessary vaccinations and health checks well ahead of time.

  • Secure an International Health Certificate from your veterinarian, if required.

2. Choose the Right Travel Gear

Investing in the right travel gear can make a big difference:

  • Crate: Ensure the crate is airline-approved, sturdy, and appropriately sized for your pet.

  • Wee-wee pads: Place these inside the crate for accidents.

  • Water bottle: Attach a water bottle to the crate or bag for easy hydration.

  • Small travel bag: For cats or small dogs travelling in the cabin, use a soft, secure carrier and get your pet accustomed to it early.

3. Talk to a Trusted Veterinarian

Consult with a veterinarian you trust to discuss your pet’s health and travel needs. They can:

  • Provide advice on travel anxiety.

  • Recommend supplements such as magnesium, passionflower, or CBD.

  • Ensure your pet is in good health for travel and provide necessary documentation.

4. Crate Train and Familiarize Your Pet

Crate training is essential for pets travelling by air. Gradually acclimate your pet to their crate by:

  • Introducing the crate as a positive space with treats and toys.

  • Take short car trips with your pet in the crate to simulate travel noises.

Rehearse the departure day a week or two in advance to reduce stress on the actual day. Practice going to the airport and handling the crate so your pet becomes familiar with the routine.

5. Plan for Calming Measures

Travel can be stressful for pets, so start calming preparations early:

  • Use supplements like Rescue Remedy, magnesium, passionflower, or CBD at least three weeks before the move.

  • Incorporate calming routines to reduce anxiety.

6. Exercise Before Departure

Before heading to the airport, give your dog a long walk with plenty of time for sniffing and bathroom breaks. Cats, too, benefit from pre-travel play sessions to expend some energy.

7. Arrive Early at the Airport

Plan to arrive at the airport at least four hours before your flight. This gives you ample time to check in your pet, handle paperwork, and ensure your furry friend is settled comfortably.

8. Stay Calm and Collected

Pets are incredibly perceptive and pick up on your emotions. If you’re stressed, they’ll feel it too. Use calming remedies like Rescue Remedy or Passionflower for both you and your pet to stay relaxed. Remember, your calm demeanour can help your pet feel safe and secure.

9. Handle Arrival with Care

Upon arrival, your pet may be scared, disoriented, or even have had accidents in their crate. Be prepared to:

  • Use pet-safe wet wipes to clean them up.

  • Carefully leash your dog or secure your cat before letting them out of the crate.

  • Take your dog for a much-needed potty break in a safe area outside the airport.

Always stay vigilant, as pets may try to bolt due to fear. Keep them securely leashed or contained until they are in a safe, enclosed space.

10. Post-Travel Care

Adjusting to a new environment can take time. Continue using calming supplements like Rescue Remedy or Passionflower for the next 3-5 days to help your pet settle in. Provide them with a quiet, secure space where they can decompress and gradually acclimate to their new surroundings.

Relocating with pets can be a challenge, but with careful preparation and a lot of love, you can make the process smoother for both you and your furry companions. Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination.
